Fight back.
Every complaint creates a record. The more of us who speak up, the harder it is to ignore. Here's what you can do — pick whichever feels right.
Call Central Hudson
Ask them to prove someone actually read your meter. Every call creates a record in their system. Be polite but firm.
Call 800-527-2714Not sure what to say? Here's a script.
"Hi, I'm calling about my account. I have a few questions:"
- "Can you verify whether my meter was physically read for my [month] bill, or was the reading estimated?"
- "My bill was $[amount], but my typical bill is around $[typical]. Can you explain the difference?"
- "Can I get a written record of this conversation emailed to me?"
If they can't verify the reading was real, say: "I'd like to request a corrected bill based on an actual meter reading."
File a complaint with the state
The Public Service Commission (PSC) regulates Central Hudson. They investigate complaints filed through their system and respond to every one. You don't need a lawyer. Plain language is fine.
What to include in your complaint
Keep it simple. Tell them:
- Which month(s) the bill was wrong
- How much they charged you vs. what's normal for you
- Whether the bill said "actual" or "estimated" — and whether you believe that
- If any bills have disappeared from your online account
- If you called Central Hudson and what they said
That's it. The PSC handles thousands of these — they know the drill. Just be honest about what happened.
Tell your state representative
State legislators oversee the PSC. When they hear from enough constituents about the same problem, things move.
Support public power
The Hudson Valley Power Authority is working to bring publicly-owned electricity to our region — accountable to us, not to Fortis shareholders. It's a long road, but it's the real fix.
